Learn the history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

while honing your artistic skills in acrylics, watercolor, and drawing!

Towering fortresses, legendary warriors, and intricate medieval designs come to life. Students will use a variety of mediums, including pencil and pen, watercolor, acrylics, and cut paper. Every lesson has stories and interesting facts from Medieval and Renaissance history followed by a related art project. Students work in an art journal creating their own illustrated history book!

A perfect complement to CC Foundations

The accompanying book, The Art Of Medieval History by Maddie Sanford and Courtney Sanford will be available by August 2025. Contains beautiful photographs of artifacts, helpful source material, and short descriptions you could use for copywork or IEW key word outline practice, and step-by-step illustrations of the art projects.

Students will design a family crest, and a stained glass window. They'll draw castles and maps, and so much more! Every week is something new! Students will work in a mixed-media art journal so that at the end of the class they have a beautiful portfolio of their work!

ALL CLASSES ARE RECORDED SO YOU CAN WATCH LATER IF YOU MISS A CLASS.

This class goes well with Classical Conversation's Foundations classes! (Especially 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who want to integrate literature with their Foundations memory work!)

No art experience is necessary. All levels are welcome.

Here's what people are saying about these classes:

  • Black Permanent Markers: Fine and Ultra-fine (Any brand). Make sure one is a regular Sharpie so we’re sure it doesn’t bleed when painted over with watercolor

  • Drawing Pencils: A #2 pencil you already have will work fine. If you’re really into art, you could pick out a set that has a variety of hardness types.

  • Blending tools and Erasers: Pencil sets sometimes include erasers and blending tools, so you only need to purchase blending tools if you don’t get a set that has them. • A blending tool is rolled-up paper that looks like a plain white pencil. We use it for shading. You can buy a variety of sizes in a pack or get one in a pencil set

  • Watercolor Palette: A beginner set of dry watercolors is fine to start out with

  • Colored Pencils: Any type.

  • Acrylic Paints: 4 oz tubes of

  • Titanium White,

  • Mars Black,

  • Quinacridone Magenta,

  • Pthalo Blue, and

  • Cadmium Yellow.

  • Exact color names vary by brand, so if you can’t find those exactly you may find them referred to as Primary Yellow, Primary Magenta, and Primary Blue. Make sure you buy the acrylic paint that is from the art section of the store rather than the craft section. You can find these in a variety of places. Micheals carries Liquitex Basics

  •

  • Paint Brushes: A set that includes a variety is great. Look for a ¾ or 1 inch flat brush, a medium size round brush, and a small round brush, as we use those the most! •

  •

  • Plastic or Paper Plates (for use as a paint palette): I use a disposable plastic plate as a palette, as it gives us lots or room to mix paints, and you can store it in a gallon ziploc bag to preserve wet paint. You’ll also need something to rinse your brushes in, like an old pasta sauce jar.

  •

  • • Glue Stick: A glue stick or school glue, whichever you have around the house will work!

  •

  • • Metalic Gold Paint Pen: any brand

  •

  • Salt - we will sprinkle salt onto wet watercolors for a special effect

  •

  • Scrap Cardboard - two cereal boxes that we will cut up. Any type of smooth cardboard like a cracker box or cereal box will work.

  •

  • Ruler
